Disease: Cataracts

WHAT IS CATARACTS?

Cataracts is the result of normal proteins in the lens start to break down and the lens becomes cloudy. People over age 60 usually start to have some clouding of their lenses. However, vision problems may not happen until years later.

Any stories of the clinic helping someone with cataracts? Include an image?

SYMPTOMS

• Aging is the most common cause of cataracts.

• Blurry Vision

• Seeing double

• Being extra sensitive to glare from lights

• Having trouble seeing well at night

• Colors seem faded

• Change in the eye's refractive error (prescription)

TREATMENT

The symptoms of early cataracts may be improved with new glasses, brighter lighting, anti-glare sunglasses, or magnifying lenses.

If these options don't help significantly, surgery is the only effective treatment. Surgery involves removing the cloudy lens and replacing it with an artificial lens. This is generally a safe, outpatient procedure.
