OPTIC NEUROPATHY

DESCRIPTION
Ischemic optic neuropathy is inflammation and/or swelling to the optic nerve. This causes a sudden and painless decrease in vision. It typically affects those over the age of 50 years.
RISK FACTORS

over 50 years old
-
have high blood pressure
-
have diabetes
-
smoke cigarettes
SYMPTOMS
Sudden loss of vision -- partial or complete -- in one eye
EVALUATION PROCESS
A dilated eye exam will be necessary to determine if ischemic optic neuropathy is present. Visual field testing, photographs and computer imaging may also be required at the time of your consultation.
